Above All, Love. (And Your May Freebies!)
Happy May 1st! It's Springtime. It's almost kids-outta-school-time. And it's Freebie time! This month, I used some gorgeous watercolor flowers by Freepik to create vibrant, springy wallpapers for your phone and desktop. In the middle of those florals, a powerful message and reminder: above all, love.
This tiny little phrase comes with personal experience for me. Some of you may recognize it from I Peter 4:8: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." Though I'd heard that verse many times before, it's first three words took on a whole new meaning when presented to me in light of my own major unforgiveness. "Loving" is not so hard when you get to pour it out on people you love and like or feel like serving. But to LOVE when you're hurt, betrayed and not loved back the way you feel like you should be, now that's loving above all.
Almost exactly two years ago, I was delivered from more than 20 years of unforgiveness toward a close family member. I am living proof that God can rip out roots of bitterness and unforgiveness and replace them, literally, with authentic love. I understand an overnight transformation like that doesn't happen all the time, though. Sometimes we have to walk through the process first before the Encounter comes. We have to practice who we want to be. This month's free download may help remind you to do just that, but please allow Holy Spirit to do the real reminding. Let Him show you what it looks like to love someone you don't yet like. Ask Him for a shift in how you see that person. Ask Him to replace your bitterness and unforgiveness with a ridiculous, hardly-makes-sense love. HIS LOVE. If He's in you, then The Love is already present in you. We are simply a people learning to walk in - and live out of - our Fullness.
I'll leave you with one quick little excerpt from Ann Voskamp's book, The Broken Way. I love this. "I am what I love and I will love you like Jesus, because of Jesus, through the strength of Jesus. I will love when I'm not loved back. I will love when I'm hurt and disappointed and betrayed and inconvenienced and rejected. I simply will love, no expectations, no conditions, no demands. Love is not always agreement with someone, but it is always sacrifice for someone."
This month, I hope you'll focus with me on loving above all. Not on our own - that won't go so well - but in the strength of Jesus alone.
